Why is there a need for affordable nutrition?

A healthy diet that is crucial , necessary for optimal health and nutrition across the life stages of individuals from the mother’s womb, to infancy, toddler years, school age children, growing adolescents to Adulthood and later in the Geriatric stage. At the same affordable to be able to attenuate malnutrition in different stages of the Nutrition cycle.

  1. Choose nutrient dense foods with inclusion of diversity of the  food groups.

    These includes food items such as whole grain, cereals,  root crops, fruit, vegetables,    lentils, seeds,  beans, nuts, ,fish , chicken , lean meats, eggs, low fat milk and dairy products , oils from plant food sources

  2. Eat a variety of foods which includes plants based sources  that will provide the needed amounts of essential nutrients for energy , protein, vitamins and minerals.
     
  3. Choose in-season and local products.

    Aside from watching out for sales and discounts, look also for products that are in-season and produced locally. These foods usually have cheaper prices and high nutritional value due to natural ripening process and reduced transportation and storage cost. 

  4. Grow own foods at home

    May it be through backyard gardening or hydroponics, or keeping a little plant box in your kitchen, growing your own food can greatly help your daily budget and make some ingredients more available and accessible.
     

  5. Prepare home cooked foods rather than ordering on line.

    Cooking food at home gives you more control over the ingredients and cooking method than eating out, allowing you to make healthier decisions. Include whole grains, a balanced selection of fruits and green leafy vegetables, and replace meats with lean proteins in your meals, or replace them with legumes, eggs, small fishes and canned fish.

  6. Generate meal plans ahead of time   

    Planning meals saves time and money, and reduces the possibility of food waste. By meal planning, unnecessary expenses can be minimized and food portions can be considered.
